El-Rewini is the dean of the College of Engineering and Mines and served as co-chairman of the Presidential Search Committee, along with Grant Shaft, former member of the State Board of Higher Education.He graduated with a Ph.D. in computer science, and he was a professor at a number of institutions, including University of Nebraska Omaha and Southern Methodist University prior to becoming the dean of UND's College of Engineering and Mines in 2008.He has been the senior vice provost at the University of North Dakota since 2017.Last year, he was a finalist in a search at Texas Tech University but ultimately remained at UND.Throughout his career in higher education, Dr. El-Rewini has led funded research projects, published numerous scholarly articles, supervised master's and doctoral students and coauthored several books, including one of the earliest books written about parallel computing.

Oct. 25-- Oct. 25--The search for a new dean of the College of Engineering & Mines is set to begin with the naming of the search committee, UND announced on its UND Today blog. Tom DiLorenzo, UND provost, announced earlier this week that Brad Rundquist, dean of Arts and Sciences, will chair the search committee to fill the permanent deanship in the College of Engineering and Mines. Brian Tande, professor of chemical engineering, was named interim dean this spring, following the resignation of Hesham El-Rewini. Tande will continue to serve until a permanent dean is named.
