Maxwell Smith

Smith is a bioethicist and co-director of the Health Ethics, Law, and Policy Lab at the University of Western Ontario.[1]Smith is a professor of bioethics who served as an ethics advisor for the World Health Organization.[2]Smith, a faculty of health sciences professor at Western who also has had an ongoing ethics advisory role to the World Health Organization, is leading a project examining the ethics behind rapid research and development of treatments and vaccines.[3]Smith led a Canadian government-funded project that examined how the world’s response to the Ebola virus might serve as an ethics template for the COVID-19 outbreak.[4]Faculty of Health Sciences professor Smith received a grant worth more than $283,000 for his project on examining the ethics of rapid research and development of coronavirus treatments and vaccines.[5]

Western’s Linda Hasenfratz and Max Smith appointed to COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Task Force

The Ontario government announced the appointment of eight members of the new Ministers’ COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Task Force today and the appointees include Western chancellor Linda Hasenfratz and Western bioethicist and assistant professor Maxwell Smith. The task force, chaired by General Rick Hillier, former Chief of Defence Staff for the Canadian Forces, will oversee the delivery, storage and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines.[4]

Why a flatter curve does not mean we've won the COVID-19 battle

"S" represents the number of those susceptible to infection. Likewise, the decision to scale back these public health measures must take into account not only "the curve" and the degree to which it has been flattened, but also the number of Canadians who remain susceptible to the virus. Assuming that recovery from the infection brings a measure of immunity, as more Canadians move from the susceptible category to infectious and ultimately to recovered, we can reasonably conclude there will be less need for such aggressive social distancing and restrictive public health measures.[1]
